Jiufen is a real place that has been asked to play a film set for twenty years. It can still be beautiful in the rain, at an hour that is not lunch. It is also, on a September Saturday, a line with a view.
The better move this month is the coast below it. The TRA line to Ruifang, then a bus or a slow ride toward Bitou, Shen’ao, or the headlands around Fulong, gives you the same geology without the same density. Bring a wind layer. The water is not a swimming invitation just because it is still summer in the basin; the east coast does not care about Taipei’s heat index.
Eat at the harbour, not at the souvenir strip. If you only have a day, turn around before you start hunting for the perfect café. The point is the cliffs and the fact that you can be back in the city before the evening thunderstorm — or, this week, before the 3pm one that has been arriving as if it has a calendar invite.
Next week we will sketch the HSR version of this instinct: west to Tainan, where the heat is drier and the streets are better at dusk.
